もしお金が目的じゃなかったら？	What if Money Was No Object What do I desire if the money was no object?
あなたが望んでいることは何か？あなたがたまらなくしたいことは何か？	What makes you itch?
どんな状況を望んでいるのか？	What sort of a situation would you like?
例えば・・・私はよく学生の進路相談にのることがある。学生は「そろそろ卒業なのですが何をしらた良いのかわからないのです」と質問してくる。	Let’s suppose, I do this often in vocational guidance of students, they come to me and say, “Well, ah, we’re getting out of college and we have the faintest idea what we want to do”.
そこで私はいつも『もしお金が目的でなかったらキミは何をしたいのか？』と質問している。「何をしてキミは人生を楽しみたいのか？」	So I always ask the question, “what would you like to do if money were no object? How would you really enjoy spending your life?”
すると面白いことに、今の教育をうけた若者たちは「画家になりたい、詩人になりたい、作家になりたい・・・でも、それではお金は稼げない」と誰もが口をそろえて言ってくるのだ。	Well, it’s so amazing as a result of our kind of educational system, crowds of students say, “Well, we’d like to be painters, we’d like to be poets, we’d like to be writers, but as everybody knows you can’t earn any money that way.”
またある学生は「馬に乗ったりしてアウトドアな生活をしたい」という。	Or another person says well, I’d like to live an out-of-doors life and ride horses.
私は「キミは乗馬学校で教えたいのか？」「何をしたいのかもっとよく考えなさい」と聞き返す。	I said, “You want to teach in a riding school? Let’s go through with it. What do you want to do?”
何がしたいのかを掘り下げていってその学生が本当にやりたいことがわかったら僕は彼にこう言うだろう。私は学生に向かって「それをしたらいいそして、お金のことは忘れるんだ」と言っている。なぜなら、もしあなたが「お金を得ることが最も大事なことだ」と言っているとしたらあなたは完全に人生を無駄に過ごしていることになるからだ。	When we finally got down to something, which the individual says he really wants to do, I will say to him, “You do that and forget the money, because, if you say that getting the money is the most important thing, you will spend your life completely wasting your time.”
生活を続けるためにしたくないことをしてお金を稼ぐということをしていれば、やりたくないことをやり続ける人生になるからだ。それは実に馬鹿げたことだ！	You’ll be doing things you don’t like doing in order to go on living, that is to go on doing things you don’t like doing, which is stupid.
そんな惨めな状態で長生きするより短い人生でも好きなことをやって過ごしたほうがまだマシだ。	Better to have a short life that is full of what you like doing than a long life spent in a miserable way.
結局のところ、なんでもいい本当に本当にやりたいことをして人生を生きていたらきっといつの間にかそのことの達人になっているだろう。	And after all, if you do really like what you’re doing, it doesn’t matter what it is, you can eventually turn it – you could eventually become a master of it.
それをやり続けるのが達人の在り方だ。	It’s the only way to become a master of something, to be really with it.
そうしたら、そんなあなたにお金を払う人も出てくることだろう。	And then you’ll be able to get a good fee for whatever it is.
だから何も心配することはない。だれか必ず興味をもつ人が出てくる。あなたのやっていることに興味を示してくる。	So don’t worry too much. That’s everybody is – somebody is interested in everything, anything you can be interested in, you will find others will.
しかし、自分がしたくないことをして人生を過ごすなんて実に馬鹿げたことだ！自分のしたくないことに人生を費やしそれを子どもたちにまで同じような道を辿るように教え受け継がせているのだ。	But it’s absolutely stupid to spend your time doing things you don’t like, in order to go on spending things you don’t like, doing things you don’t like and to teach our children to follow in the same track.
だから、自分のやっていることをよく見直すことだ。もし子どもを育てているのなら、自分と同じような道を歩むよう教育していないかどうか	See what we are doing is we’re bringing up children and educating to live the same sort of lives we are living.
人は、自分を正当化しようとするために充実した人生を送ろうとしていながら同じようなやり方で子どもたちを育てているのだ。	In order that they may justify themselves and find satisfaction in life by bringing up their children to bring up their children to do the same thing, so it’s all retch and no vomit– it never gets there.
だから、この質問にじっくり取り組むことがとても大切なことになってくるのだ。	And so, therefore, it’s so important to consider this question:
「私は何を望んでいるのか？」	What do I desire?
